I went for the Muirwoods. I've always had a soft spot for Marins! They get a bad rap - so I hope it wins...

Sorry about the less than great picture of the P7... but it's the only photo I had. Camera no likey laptop anymore...

Mavic hubs, yes, but that's no Mavic crankset.

I voted for "Herbert".

Ok my mind is made up:

1. Mattbrown's Kirk. Period correct, immaculately presented and e stay fan boy stantus guaranteed. This months winner for me.

2. Jango's DBR. The best 'rider' out of the bunch with out a shadow of a doubt. A very tidy build to boot.

3. Lewis1641's GT. Two little things let this little minter down for me. Firstly Mag 21 Ti forks (come on, this is middle of the range month!) and secondly it's a GT in a 'is GT cool' month, I don't want anyone getting any silly ideas that GT's are cool.

Seems to me people are desperate to vote for something that's not mid-range. I love an old stumpy as much as the next person, but if it's mid-range where do Rockhopper and Hardrock fall? And the Cannondale, does Mavic mtb componentry fall below Shimano LX now.

My sentiments exactly. I was really pleased with this botm criteria as I'd hoped to see more of the bikes that were on my radar as a nipper.
Bit dissapointed as I think the spirit of this has been lost and we're back closer to a usual botm.
That said, there are some great bikes this month, and two Jamis which must be a first 8)

It's not a stumpjumper; it's a stumpjumper sport. Besides, the stumpjumper was definitely midranged when you look at the bike it was based on, the Ritchey. The Stumpjumper was quite attainable.

The cannondale was not top of the line, not even in their own product line. I gathered this was for mid-level, not entry level.

None of the bikes entered this month would stand much of a chance winning in a regular month, so imho, the spirit of the special midlevel contest has been kept.

After much consideration Mattbrowns Kirk gets it 8) nicely finished cracking colour and looks well balanced. Proper interesting looking bike and the one I'd most like a go of. I reckon some better pics would do this bike justice. This fits the mid range bill for me to a T.

I disagree. BITD before suspension bikes hit the line-ups, a Stumpjumper was top of Specialized's range.

Now elitists may not hold that in much regard, but that doesn't make them mid-range.

Depending on resources, anything is quite attainable.

That doesn't necessarily make something mid-range, though.

When that Stumpy was released was there any other bikes in the range? The Stumpy was the first mass produced mtb was it not? Did Gary Fisher have a line out by then i.e not the handmade stuff. WOuld have been breezers and ritcheys etc

"saddle and frame bags, pumps, dirty and/or mismatched tyres, crappy environments (backyards, basements, streets, etc) and cellphone photos."

Guilty to some at least of those - to my way of thinking IT'S A BIKE and while I won't vote for my own nor would I for any that for all I know never go out!

And having looked at 'em all again...the Fuji is nice, but I can't believe it came with a single ring - and the tyres are clean! They are clearly all magic bikes - no need to carry tubes and tools!

But most of 'em could be static models....

I have no doubt missed the point of the exercise, but then I often do.

I'm far from an elitist.

This is not an 81 stumpjumper; it's a stumpjumper sport from 83 or 84, by that time, there were many a company making mountain bikes. The Stumpjumper was mid-level by that year if not earlier.

read a book, or a web page or two, dude

(I'm kidding with that last remark, thus the wink...don't know, not as fun when you have to spell it out, but sometimes tone is mistaken over the intranet :P )
