trek 8700 project

Hi everyone
I am new to the forum and I joined because I found this topic about the Trek 8700.
I have been actively riding this bike for 15 years and it's still my one and only bike and I have no complaints about it for so many thousands of kilometers behind it. I know there are some good new bikes on the market but I don't know why I still won't change my 8700.
I am so passionate about it and had so many great moments and sessions with it I just wanted to share it with you

Trek 8700 Pro

I have owned my Trek 8700 pro from new. I bought it in 1992 from a specialist cycle shop that had only one in stock, as at the time they were scarce. I have replaced anything that needed replacing with O/E gear, like chain-sets. I still have the O/E catalogue and receipt, both mint.

The Original rims wore out last year and have been upgraded with New Mavic rims. The XC-pro suntour gear is a work of art. If you have never seen this suff it is simply the best engineered and designed. Everything about Suntour XC Pro is purpose-made and functional. I take the Dia-Compe 986 brakes & cables apart every year to clean and lubricate (the cables are original)

I really like hard-tails and the ride/performance is amazing, especially up gradients and unforgiving mountains. My brother has a top-spec-Giant full-suspension-full-carbon, crazy expensive wheels and it is a lot heavier with all the suspension, than the Trek. I have had countless, amazing summer days on my Trek 8700pro.

Would I ever sell my Trek ? - No. There's a prefect 'balance in the design & construction' that makes you feel your 'part of the bike' rather than on the bike! - at the time the 8700pro was-made-to-win and everything was made 'just to be functional and no more"

Very marathonman

I had a 16.5" one of these, couldnt resist it when York cycleworks were banging em out at £650 :shock: only differences were the stem was a Tioga Tbone and the grips were Odi ..............bloody lovely to ride

Why did I sell :?

Recently put a set of RS Mag Tens on a mates 8300 they are nice bikes, love the orange of the 8900 and the XC Pro.

hi retrobikeguy, why did you sell the trek ? i don't think many were brought to the uk. I think the USA had a green version, I saw in a catalogue (Uk had the brilliant orange.)

I sold it so I could purchase a GT karakoram elite, I had one stolen the year before and missed it greatly so as soon as I found another second hand ........... I bought it, and a giant peloten racer at the same time.

Still, it went to a good home..... my mate put mudguards, pannier rack and slicks on it :shock:

Sorry, but as I told you by PM, I really can't agree with the red tires. I could understand that you prefer modern tires for riding the Trek, but please, classic black wall ! You are so near perfection and you kill your job

For the colors : The really first trek 8900 (the top of the line) was neon yellow lugs with fork and front lugs neon green. The crank was a cook bros.
1990, the 8900 was all yellow lugs, instead the 8700 was neon orange. In 1991, the same color. Shimano XT became suntour XC pro on both bikes. The main differences : RS1 and A-TAC stem on the 8900, only the steel stem and the Tange BIG fork on the 8700. Both bike had very beautifull wheeles with the very lightweight matrix rims and bullseyes hubs, diacompe SS5 lvers…
If I remember, the 8700 weight quite 10kg, ready for riding !

An interesting read thank you. Your facts are correct. I remember the neon yellow model 8900 in the brochures. For me I went for the looks of the 8700 neon orange/carbon
