Short cage rear mech with a triple?

Anyone risked this:

Seems feasible as long as you are sure you won't accidentally drift into big-big.

As currently I have a short cage or spare MTB rear mechs and need something to work with a triple until I find a long cage road mech, which would you choose: MTB mech or short cage?

MTB mech.

1. No risks.
2. Easy to swap over to a road long cage as the chain will be the right length already.

Never set one up that cannot do big-big. You always select it at a moment of crisis, like when you are tired, in traffic etc.

With Campag short cage road mechs I have run a 12-23 with 30-39-48, and a Shimano short cage mech has a longer cage so should take a bit more.
