Wow! That changes the game a bit! I'd assumed from your original posting that you had two Raleighs, one a Reg model and the other something else. This is a lot more interesting!

Take a look at this page for a couple of lovely Reg Haris restorations. I would guess that there would be some nice pics in his autobiography too, though I haven't read it. Perhaps someone here has it, and can comment?

You can try H Lloyd for decals, as per my previous post. I'm pretty sure I saw some Reg Harris ones in there and not just the Raleigh-Reg ones. Having said that, from what I can see the current decals are in reasonable shape, as is most of the paint. I would be inclined to try to restore it first rather than assuming it needs a respray from the beginning. Once you have the worst of the rust off (drive side chainstay looks to have the worst of it) then you can try to find a reasonable colour match, If you're not happy with it afterwards you can always choose to go the respray route.

Regarding 'as-is' restorations, take a look at some of Spokesmann's projects to see just how well old bikes can come up with reasonable effort from the owner.

Cheers - and good luck!
Gareth

I love that gold colour flamboyant paint on that RH cycle. Gorgeous.

If you follow the link to classicrendezvous there is a further link at the bottom of the page which very honestly puts the Reg Harris cycles in perspective. Reg was an enthusiastic character, drove like a demon, and lived his life in the fast lane. It was all at a time when the British cycle manufacturing was generally in difficulty with a shrinking market. The smaller mass production cycle companies had either been bouight by TI or Raleigh, or were struggling, with retailers closing or failing as well.
In the mid 50's BSA were giving shops consignments of 50 bikes to be invoiced when they were sold.
I just found a bit of off air video from 1974/5 showing Reg in the pro sprint.

Reg Harris, Raleigh and Carlton.

Reg Harris became a Director of Carlton after the Raleigh takeover (in 1960) as it was he who suggested Raleigh either set up an exotic division (so to speak) or buy a specialist builder.

Raleigh were set to do this with Reg at the helm, backed out at the last minute and at Reg's suggestion then purchased Carlton.

Reg was not a Carlton Director for long.

Reg Harris was a proper hero. He was before my time but Commando should've had a strip about him!!!

Roadking.

reg lived (and is buried) not far from me (macclesfield); i even have a set of wheels that were built by his race mechanic.

some older club members tell me they used to see him fairly regularly around the local cheshire lanes. one clubmate told me of a time he, as a 'eccy board employee, went to read reg's meter. he told reg that he was a keen club cyclist and reg then produced tea and cake and told him "let's make it a clubrun then".

legend.

It is true Reg continued to ride the cheshire lanes, and was often around some of the Cheshire time trial courses spectating and keeping up with his many cycling friends in the area. Contact Dave Marsh at the Universal Cycle Centre in Maltby if you need a good source of spares, help and advice, he and his team were originally with Carlton, know the inside story, and if you need it provide an excellent respray service
