chain link extractor

can anyone tell me the purpose of a secondary bridge in a chain link extractor. bit perplexed as to what they do, primary is obvious, but secondary?

Once you have reassembled the chain, the link you re-joined will be stiff, yes?
If so, from the other side, press the rivet back, with the chain supported on the second flange. Voila! chain link unstiffened! :D
Hope that makes sense. My brain's still not up to much this morrow.

oh i thought they were just for larger chains (of which i have never seen, bar a m/cycle chain!)

i normally just flex the chain sideways in my hands to loosen it :?

why do I sometimes feel i'm talking to myself, its ok I remembered anyway, I agree with you both, I too use my hand for these things, I think its pointless really to use the secondary bridge, why can't they think of something more useful like a bottle opener, anyway glad to see your all awake at least. thanks.

  no problem

also, after the second plate bit, why are they so wiiide? i reckon you could probably shave some length off most of them to just the one plate and gap for chain :?

true, a bit lighter and thiers enough metal spare for a bottle opener!
and how about a chain pin stop device to stop the pins dropping out,
obviously adjustable for different chain width.
