The ride was around 220 miles, including the 1500ft climb over Kirkstone pass just south of Ullswater (good pub at the top though).
As far as stopping is concerned, you just have to plan way ahead. Riding any distance in traffic is more mentally tiring as you need a fair while to slow down then dismount ( a car bootlid has been used as a footrest before now though when they overtook just before stopping at lights).
