Road Bike to Cyclo-Cross Bike conversion - is it possible?

I have a 90's Raleigh M-Trax 6000R which runs great on the road and was a real cheap option to get into road bikes.

However, in order to stay alive round where I live (heavy traffic on one main road) it's safer to use quiet roads but these are linked by dirt tracks (unsuitable for skinny wheels/tyres).

Rather than keep getting off my bike on dirt tracks I would prefer to keep riding so thought of partially converting the bike to Cyclo-Cross style (wider wheels/tyres).

Has anyone done this - is it possible?

I know I could ride my MTB anywhere instead but the road bike is so much quicker on tarmac and don't really want to slow down on longer rides!

However, if I do convert, will the cyclo-cross tryes lose the "road" advantage?

Help!!!!

The 'Big Cheese' has a thread on a 'Winter Fay.' Have a look at that. I suspect it depends on how much clearance the frame has.
