I think they are ok - I run modern cleats and they fit all the range of spds I have ok no probs. Count: 525 (dx) spd, xt spds, ritchey spds, and three sets of modern ones - and use the same shoes.

All Shimano pedals have interchangeable cleats.... apart from the little used and horrendous PD-M536 and the PD-M858, both designed to shed mud like Time, but failed in every respect! one of the few Shimano total b***s ups of the 90's
