I think ,that even with the original key , due to its lengh it must have been pretty hard to tighten it due to flex.

speaking to the mechanic in the shop he says that the bolts tended to strip out of the compression rods ( they have a small brass threaded insert ) and so should NOT really be that tight anyway .

I think the material is of a rarer type still - "Stee-eelll" I think it may be called. Very rare.
