I believe the noise is more pawls, more locating 'teeth', stronger springs.

The noise from the kings is the spring apparently. I've got 3 sets of kings and I do like them, had 4, but sold the singlespeed. The hope pro2 seem louder. The singlespeed versions of both king and hope seem louder, probably due to the bigger hub shell.
Old hugi are nice, less fussed about the newer ones.
Royce are like old campag, lovely, loud, but not offensive. Only the build quality isn't the best
