Bad luck. I've had vista64 for nearly 3 years now. It's been ok to be fair, however as with all windows install over time is slllooooowwws down.
 
Sounds unlucky, i've been running Windows Seven 64 for a few months now. I really like it and it seems pretty stable
 
The funny thing is, it's more often the applications that crash than the operating system. But the poor old operating system is always blamed.

John, if your wife's school is part of the Microsoft Academic Alliance, she can get a copy of Windows 7 for free. Lots of schools are.
