Stumpjumper m2 questions

Right.............

I assumed that a m2 stumpy was an m2 stumpy.But, each time I see a pic of one on this site it appears different from the last .

Mine is a 1999 and has extra "bracing"at the headset, but some don't have this.
Others that i have seen have a small piece that connects the chain stays towards the bb, mine has none of this.

did any m2's have rear disk mounts ?

were they all marked up as m2x on the seat tube ?

Again the decals appear to differ as well. Apart from "m2x" on the seat tube, there is no mention of m2 at all.

hi mate, i think i may have one of these (no paint!), does yours have a specialized stamp on the headtube gusseting?

Sweet! Is this the only specialised with the S on the toptube gusset ?

This frame is looking like bargain of the year!

Many later Specialized had the S on the gussett including later hardrocks so i wouldnt get too excited
Up to 97 there was the M2X and then there was the M2 XX up till 2001 for Stumpies, S works were M2X till 96 then M2XX till 99. Main differences were gusseting and increased tube thickness on the leading edge of the chainstays.

Pics would help. Especially of chainstays/bb area. And of the headtube. How much does it weigh?

I happen to have a 1999 Stumpjumper Comp here at the moment. Acquired it for a friend, you understand, not really my cup of tea.

It is definitely a 1999, as per Bikepedia. However Bikepedia says the tubeset was M2XX, but this example has a sticker saying M2X, which incidentally is at the foot of the down tube, not the seat tube.

It has a gusset with S stamped on it on top of the top tube, it has no disc mount and it has no chain stay bridge.

Same as mine. And yes my "m2x" is on the down tube not seat tube as I posted earlier.

Yours too must be mirror blue if a 99 comp.


Why did they puy m2x on the downtube if by then it was made from m2xx. And, what is the difference ?

Jamie Dyer is the expert. Obviously M2XX must have been a more advanced form than M2X. In 1998 it was used for the S-Works when the Stumpjumper had plain ol' M2X. Then in 1999, according to Bikepedia, the Stumpjumper got the M2XX when the S-Works got M4:

Except maybe not? I would assume that what it says on the sticker is what is under the paint. US consumer law requires the sticker to be accurate, and in any case it doesn't seem plausible that they would invest extra cash in a 'better' tubeset and then put a sticker on there for the previous tubeset.
