Didn't know there were different pedal threads

Just tried to put some modern pedals onto my Stronglight 49D cranks. Tried being the operative word - they won't fit.
The Stronglight thread is smaller. So with LOOKs being a no go what are my options?
I think I have some old Campag quill pedals at my parents house, are they likely to fit?
Cheers.

Basically 2 sizes of pedal thread 1/2" & 9/16"

From Sheldon Brown's website:

Thread Sizes

* Most pedals have 9/16" x 20 tpi threads.

* Pedals for one-piece cranks are 1/2" x 20 tpi.

* Older French bicycles used a 14 mm x 1.25 mm thread, but these are quite rare. French-threaded pedals are commonly labeled "D" and G" (French for "droite" and"gauche" (right and left). A French pedal will start to thread into a 9/16 x 20 crank, but will soon bind. Do not force it, or it will damage the crank.

Your old Stronglights will probably have French (14mm x 1.25mm) threads. Because the pitch is so close to BSC, you can have a bike shop run BSC taps through your cranks to take the diameter out to 9/16". Alternatively, scan ebay.fr for some matching (metric) pedals.
