Was it Shands (?) who did the original? Anything you dont like about it? Tempted to do this to a 1997 rockhopper, and reading your threads here and on other forums for ideas.

Yeah Steve Shand did the work. I would happily use him again (top quality) but shipping the frame to Scotland and back is expensive.

I chose Enigma bikes because they are fairly local and offered a good price for the work. Also, looking at pics of their fillet brazed, hand built MTB frame on their website clinched the deal for me. Perfectly even and smooth fillets

Tip: If having work done on your bike fully prep the areas to be brazed: Remove paint in the areas to be worked on etc. Clean frame and fully dissemble. Tell them the bike will be fully prepped. They hate dirty bikes/frames and if you do the prep yourself they may offer a cheaper price on the work because its less time and hassle for them.

Had the bike weighed today in the local bike shop.....


23.3lbs with heavy standard inner tubes. Not bad I think considering it has a steel frame, sus forks, and hydraulic disc brakes

Need to shave 150g from somewhere to take it sub 23lb. Doing the rear wheel and changing the innertubes should do it. The frame should be a touch lighter after the disk mount and brace are re-done too, plus it has still has the original paint on under the white. I have asked Enigmabikes to use superlight tubing for the brace.

Wow, that is some nice work. There website is awesome. Not quite what I was after for a cheap frame like mine. Might get it sand blasted and have a mate have a go. Seems pointless spending 5 or 6 times more what I paid for the frame getting it done, but that is my frame not yours. Mine is more for a hack/playaround then a serious bit of kit like yours. I appreciate how good yours looks presently and how good those enigma ones are though.

Would you consider £75 too much to spend on a mount + hose guides?

Once re-spayed (about £40) plus new decals (£25) you have brand new frame that looks the biz. I reckon its worth it if you love the way the frame rides, use it as your main bike, and cant live without it.

The 19" frame that this thread was started about cost me about £160 in total from bare frame to modifications, to re-spray, and new decals.

Had a bit of a fettle and thought I'd add a little update to this thread even though the new frame means its a new project so to speak.

I happened to have some gold alloy bolts to hand so I decided to 'tune' my mechs a bit.

Both mechs also got the cable ends tidied up with black heatshrink.



The rear mech got a further modification to save a few more grams. I removed the barrel adjuster (there's one on the shifter so its not needed really). All I did to make the rolamagig fit snugly was use a countersink bit to create a slight 'pocket' at the cable entry for the rolamagig to sit in.



While I was at it I decided to add a little touch of bling to the Thomson stem. As I had replaced the bolts on my Thomson Post with Ti ones I had the original gold coloured ones spare. These were too long for the stem clamp and the threads didn't go far enough so I re-worked them to fit. Doesnt save me any weight but looks nice I think.

And there you go, a perfect example of my poor memory. Reading through this interesting thread and I find a post I'd made only days before...but with no memory of making it.

Yes that will be my bike Mike, it's waiting for me to build up the courage to take it out and get it dirty!

Ive got a few bits on the way....

-The nice lightweight hose guides are coming from the US.
-Jagwire white cable housing with gold alloy ferrules.
-Gold alloy bolt and Nylock nut for the Avid Rolamagic
-Gold alloy bolt for the headset topcap
-Gold alloy Nyloc nuts for the brake levers
-Ghetto tubeless kit for the front wheel (only doing front for now).
-The guts of a dead 2003/4 SID Race fork (lockout, dual air etc).
-15g red alloy seatpost clamp.

A few more bits will be coming soon like disk brake hose and fittings to match the colours of the gear cables, lots of alloy and Ti bolts.

The fork will be experimented on with the modern internals.

Also thinking about a 9mm thru axle/skewer modification on the front hub using the DT RWS 9mm skewer. Needs a bit more thought as it involves seriously modifying the existing axle or making something from scratch. As I'm running SID's I want to maximise the stiffness of the front end and the 9mm RWS apparently improves this.

Later I need to get a new XC717 rim for the rear, and have it re-built with DT rev's so it matches the front. Once done the rear is going tubeless too.

Plan is to get the new build as close to 22lb as possible without anything too major like changing the stem, seatpost, cranks etc. Its what the weight weenies call 'tuning' for some reason.
