Whats the test to determine aluminium from titanium?

"Trouble is since then anyone who wants titanium bits made up comes straight to me"

Jones - Youve just shot yerself in the foot there.... ;)

Get a magnet- if it doesn't attract, it's Aluminium.
If it shows non-positive attraction, it's Titanium.

I found this in the Alexandre Vinikourov Big Book of Metallurgy for Boys.

Stick it in a bottle of coke, leave overnight, it it is there in the morning it's probably titanium. :)

I was assuming they didn't want to mash whatever it was to test it

hang on, your suggestion of scratching it with a nail to test surface hardness is EXACTLY the same as my bikepro test, IE different ways of testing surface hardness! except my links to industry standard tests & yours is "scratching it with a nail"   ;)

yeh I think my suggestion is a serious suggestion jez ;) it would probabily help if you told us what the part is?

do you have them to hand? the ti chainrings i've used are generally much smaller side on. IE less material used, if not they;re be heavier than the alu 1s :)
