source of chains for 5 & 6 speed non index freewheels

First one would be vert cheap and nasty. probably not made to a reasonable degree of tolerance and could be a source of trouble with poor changing or slipping.

Any 3/32" derailleur chain will do the job. As a general rule with chain you get what you pay for so the cheaper the chain the quicker it will wear and the more likely it will be to fail. Bear in mind also that a worn chain will wear out sprockets and rings faster so it really is a false economy to go for a really cheap chain.

The best chain you can afford is probably the best chain for you. Of course this doesn't mean you should throw money away, once you've settled on a particular chain make sure you're buying it from the cheapest retailer.

As stated KMC are a good brand, but they make lots of different models.
