Removing Crown Race without proper tool ??

Just make sure you use a FOB screwdriver and gently tap around the whole of the race not just one big hit in one spot

A stilson wrench (not wench) that opens wide enough and gentle taps with a hammer. Pressure is then being applied more evenly. Screw driver when I couldn't find a large enough stilson though...

Hammer and screwdriver for me too although recently I've started to see the sense of headsets with split races as changing them over is so easy.

Someone told me the good advice...if the tool you're using to get the race off is a softer (weaker) metal than the race itself...then you'll be ok.

I use a big, wide, soft (ie: cheap) flathead screwdriver and hammer.

The actually tool you can buy to remove races is bulky and super expensive.
