Tweaked the paintjob, colours were too solid looking so i sponged it all over with Kaki green before going over it with enamel laquer, cant remember how many coats, lost count at six , got a full set of new bearings for the rear from a local engineering place, fitting was a simple case of knocking the old ones out and the new ones in, got the headset in and bolted the fork crowns in place, still waiting on fork seals to get the legs together, should have them tomorrow and get the forks built up over the weekend.

Here is the Shiver forks in bits, paid top money for these of E-bay and they turned out to be leaking (not mentioned in add), seller agreed to refund £50 for the cost of seals and oil so not so bad, though maybe i should have pushed for £90 as this is what most bike shops would charge for a seal and oil change.

They are simple things though, bottom nut off, top cap off and the whole lot comes apart (spilling oil everywhere), the main seal levers out (after taking off the spring clip), the long black things are the main bushes which just push out once the main seal is removed, superb, simple, stong design.

May try filling them with ATF after reading the "fork oil" thread.

The best stuff to run in shiv's is 5 or 7.5 weight gold spectre. I found they dive going into corners etc with 5 unless you crank your compression on both legs a considerable amount, but once done, they are ultra smooth.

Also, best fix for shivers to fix the notorious noodle legs is to have a stainless or similar axle lathed out. Costs about 50$ plus labor US rate, so I'm thinking it will be comparable there also. A custom axle will make the shivers feel like your running some f1 or gism forks they are so stiff.

Lookin good on the frame Phil wood offers the best bearings on the market might I add, so if you ever wanna replace em all, they will have what you need.

The thing is these are not mx forks that utilize steels rather than aluminum and plastics. Atf will ultimately put more wear on a set of shivers than proper oil. 15 bucks for a quart of golden spectre.... and that will last you 2 changes... and shivers can go a good while btw changes.


Id only run specific new tech oils like gs in em. They will perform better and last longer


To add... shivers do leak, as with all inverted or usd forks. It is fairly common and doent mean seals are bad. Just gotta pay attention to how much oil is coming out.

Id replace All of the bolts with grade 10 stainless which u can find at decent hardware stores. It will help stiffen the forks up abd also guarantee you never strip a bolt (shiver axle clamps are notorious as you can crank em down pretty tight. In fact. You must crank em tight as the clamps are the only thn holding the axle in unlike newer type forks which ise threaded axle caps like 888s.


Make sure the 2 upper c clups that basically hold the lowers and wheel in. Are in good shape for obvious reasons.

To add... generally you don't touch the bolts on base of axle clamps til after the forks are broken down. Avoids breaking and stripping out the internals if done last.
