thats an original M2 you've got there. I know the paint on those wasnt ideal & tended to flake off as a mate chris had 1 till it got nicked! 
. as such an early iconic M2 I'd say keep it as is & make it a daily rider
for the record I really like the original colour, same for a LOT of that era speskys

Thanks guys, seems to be quite a split between keeping faith with the original (or near enough i.e. red with yellow decals) or doing something else (but will probably not go with white and skulls!).
