Hi, I building a retro bike, and going to get a crankset.

I want to check during the 80s to 90s, are all the crankset silver in colour? Is painted cranks common?

Also, which year is those black crankset start to become common?

Thanks, then before 1992, is there any red crankset?

I want to paint my cranks to match my frame. Worry this will make the bike look abit too "modern"

Campagnolo did some with a dark grey finish..early 90's if I remember right.
Colour coded was certainly not common....

many pros in the uk in the 70's

has their alloy parts coloured to match the bikes

remember Dany horton had green cranks one year

my Ron Kitchings were always done in black

if you want to get parts coloured

contact AA anodizing in Colne

tel 01282 869905

do a good job at a fair price

Thanks, I just finish spray painting my frame last week.

Will use the remaining paint for the cranks. Also anodising red sometime look abit pinkish...

Shimano Sante about 1988 was one of the first to feature white-painted cranks, followed by Gipemme amongst others. Campagnolo did a dark-grey Century finish around the same time - the problem was if using toe-straps, it didn't take long to wear the paint off. The fad for anodising came in the early 90s for MTBs - particularly purple and blue
