Please tip off fellow NW&NW Area members of potential retro gold at the NW&NW Area bike shops you visit.

I'll start:

Worth a Visit:

Dyno-Start, Carnforth
Old Raleigh dealership, dig deep and there are XT and DX threaded headsets to be found, odd retro rims, retro clothing, crud claws, ti bits and bobs and original old school decals from Oakley, Onza and Pace. Much plundered by yours truely, but if your passing by worth a trip. Ask nicely and you'll be shown their Raleigh museum too.

Lakeland Cycles, Bolton-Le-Sands
Deals mainly in repairs but also buys, restores and sells on. Many a bargain found in here and nothing is ever too much trouble for the owner. So whether it's a bike box or a bike project your after, it could be worth a visit. I've often found mid range Marin's, Kona's, Raleighs to be had for decent money.

Ride-On, Rawtenstall
A good and knowledgeable bunch of lads who specialize in DH. But don't let that put you off, they appreciate the old-school stuff and are only too happy to help. Can be pricey and discounts are rare, but there is a little retro gold to be had if late 90's is your era. GT rigid forks, odd rims like citrus Mavics and more can be found.

DJ Cycles, Ramsbottom
Run by ex Leisure Lakes mechanic Damien. A really nice fella who appreciates the old stuff. Takes a lot of old stuff in part ex so you can drop lucky here. No NOS stuff though as he's not been open long.

Avoid:

Henry Gregson, Accrington
You'll walk in and think you might of struck gold. It's a tip with bits everywhere, but he just won't let you look or take the remotest interest in what your after.

Ewood Bikes, Blackburn
Sadly they threw it all in a skip! BNIB RC-35's the lot. Thought nobody was interested in this stuff anymore. A nice fella though and very helpful. A decent roadie shop.

North West Mountain Bike Centre - especially if invited upstairs (all manner of loveliness lurks up there). Healthy respect for old skool - whenever my Pace goes in they make sure all the young whippersnappers learn about its history. Excellent wheelbuilder.

Sett Valley Cycles - Sam is a good spanner. Has been known to lurk on here, owns a thumbshifter retrobike t-shirt. Best shop in New Mills to ram raid.

High Peak Cycles - helpful and good workshop. Glossop

AVOID - Mark Anthony in Buxton, Evans in Manchester, Harry Halls- a once good shop filled with staff too arrogant to serve customers, shame!

West End Cycles Colwyn Bay

has a few bits and bobs around the shop, but after a chat he has a huge warehouse full of unsold bikes from the 70's onwards.

Still to arange to go see.

Gerry Shields in Failsworth, Manchester. On the A62 next to the War Memorial.

Very knowledgable with time for your request. Will hunt for parts for you plus he has NOS SR Sakae cranks and stuff like that from the early 80s.

In the shop itself I spotted a Mercian from late 70s or so plus a couple oif tandems, one a Pashley with Maguras.

I don't think he's EVER thrown anything away . . .

Wheelbase - Staveley, Cumbria. Loads of bikes and parts in stock, but nothing retro. Seem to be extremely keen to sell Treks, must be the best commission! Nice shop though and the staff are helpful enough.

Leisure Lakes - Lancaster, Lancashire. Nothing retro and tbh not that well stocked. The lass on the counter hasn't got the foggiest either, refers to her computer and just says "computer says no!"

The Edge - Lancaster, Lancashire. Nice showroom, but another shop that just wants to sell you a bloody Trek! Fairly helpful and have decent stocks of BB's, cassettes and chains. Nothing particularly retro to found though.

Halfords - Lancaster, Lancashire. Never a Halfords fan but was quite surprised at how much stock they have. Again nothing retro but good for tyres, this branch currently has a stack of Panaracer Fire XC in wire bead 1.8" (a personal favourite) for just £10 a tyre
