Okay,
my second question is about the center to center spacing between the cassette cogs.
There are two types of spacing, see:

They talk about the highest and lowest spacers, what's high and what's low?

I always thought that low would refer to the large sprockets and that high would refer to the small ones. To be honest that difference in spacing shouldn't make any difference especially if you use a decent shimano floating jockey as that has far more than .2mm float.

I run xc pro thumbshifters with XTR mech and cassette , no problem at all .
