7 SPEED FREEHUB REPLACEMENT - ADVICE

the options you have are to use say only seven cogs from a 9 speed cassette on your freehub. you then get the 9-speed index spacing, but will only have 7 gears.
alternativley, you can replace the freehub with a 9 speeder. but you will face some problems - the axle & skewer might not be long enough for the extra width, and you will need additional spacers. The wheel will also need redishing (centering-up) cos the rim wont be central to the axle which is now wider on the freehub side.

If you use a 9 speed cassette as a starting point and remove the largest cog and spacer, it's EXACTLY the same size as 7s...which is handy. 
You need to start with cheaper cassettes (105 or lower) as the upmarket ones have an alloy cog carrier which doesn't split.
