to be honest yours sounds more of a set up problem. I havent had need to use friction since 92 when I first started using M900 rapidfire, cant believe I've been that lucky! :LOL:
 
one thing i did do was remove those silly gear indicators. This wouldn't affect the gear changing?

on top of the shifter pods indicators? (or less common roadie style inline cable indicators?) shifter pod indicators shouldnt make a difference. just tape over the holes left so dirt doesnt get into the shifter.
I'd guess you've just had cable stretch affecting the indexing.
