Project No. 6: Alpinestars Cro-Mega SS

Looks like your local agricultural gate welder is pretty handy afterall Mark. It looks like you've had a good job done there.

As an aside, I'm pretty sure that the box actually contained a TV which you will no doubt ingeniously attach to the frame. You should get a good signal with your massive AT-4 bars. ;)

Back from Powder Coat

For the sum of £50 I got the frame, forks and some other part powder coated or blasted at Moto-Coat. I originally asked for the frame to be in 2 colours as per the 1991 bikes, but sadly the masking that they used was having a detrimental effect on the other colour. So in the end I decided to get everything done in gloss white and use this as a base to work from. Which is a good thing as the new finish has highlighted the frames imperfections, thus I can now fill them with body filler and achieve a nice smooth finish. The frame will then be painted in the 1991 style of 2 colours.

Whilst at the powder coaters I got a few extra parts blasted or finished in powder coat. I have plans for these to be either polished or painted.

Decals

I originally planned to paint on the ‘ripped’ effect decals, but figured this would be a very difficult thing to achieve. So I got some tracing paper and felt tips and copied the graphics from my old 1991 cro-mega DX.

Ultimately I got these traces from doing this:

I then scanned them into my PC and used the ‘paint’ application to colour them in. This is what I achieved:

Rear Stays:

I then sent these off to Gil, who is currently turning them into decals. Gil had already been busy though, creating these decals for the project.

Think it will quite a while before I can get them fitted to the frame, as the work needed to the frame in terms of filling, priming and painting is rather large. You now know as much as I do :D

Wow
White is definitely the way forward with these old E-stays :) ;)

That's a hell of an effort on getting the decals right, and if it all comes off, I'll be coming your way for a set for my 91 Cro-Mega :)

Ready for Primer

Been busy this last week preparing the frame for primer and ultimately painting. The powder coating process showed up all the frames little defects like small dents and small marks where the canti's, cable bosses, etc once sat. So i've had the low numbers of wet and dry paper and the body filler on duty ("a golf ball of filler to a pea of hardner" cheers Mr. China ;) ). A combination of the two and many man hours have produced a good even finish ready for primer. Whilst I had the body filler out I also filled the holes in the tubes used to allow the welding gases out, I've always been amased that manufacturers don't fill these at the factory as they just encourage water into the frame causing corrosion.

The final colours have been chosen too. I'm going for Graphite Grey metallic on the front, rear and forks and gloss white in the middle. The divider decals have arrived from Gil (which are amasing even by Gils standards!) so i'm now all set to paint :D
