Or is the price of good condition/ NOS/ old/ retro road stuff going through the roof just lately?

NOS Campagnolo is almost the same price as new:

OK I've cherry picked extreme examples but I've noticed it over the last 18 months or so. There are still good parts to be had but even Nuovo Record is creeping up and early 600 is following.

Is it just me or is it because I'm grumpy about not being able to finish a period build off without having top remortgage the girlfriend.

I quite agree - I reckon I could almost replace my 1994-6 Campag Record / Chorus stuff with brand new Centaur these days.

I wonder if it is because we have reached the stage of diminishing returns? I genuinely don't think I need 11 Speed, so 10 speed is good enough and whereas in the past I would accept the need to upgrade several components for a noticeable performance increase, now I will pay more to replace what I need to keep my perfectly functional set up going.

It is the same for computers and tech stuff - the performance/quality is now approaching the stage where it outclasses our ability to use it. 12megapixels for a 7x5'' photo??

Also the modern stuff is Fugly.

I have noticed this since I last did a bike build 2 years ago, Campagnolo rims I was buying NOS for £30 are now costing £70 - £ 80. Some of the factor is the exchange rate when importing goods into the UK and the other fact is that suppliers know the parts are in demand and getting scarce so increasing the price.

Other examples include Cinelli bars NOS were £30 now any thing up to £70 or the greatest hike seems to be for Campagnolo Hubs, 2006 model I paid around £120 are now going for £280 on ebay !!!

I am now starting to stockpile certain items I think I may need in the future

Yep, prices are definitely rising fast. Clearly, Ebay is part of the reason. Suddenly there's a world market for all those bits we used to give away to mates. The weak Sterling doesn't exactly help.

But all is not lost. You can still pick up some good stuff at sensible prices at cycle jumbles - but only if you get there before all the Ebay traders bag all the best items.

I've noticed the same - but if we consider that back in the day, most people had mid-range groupsets but when doing restorations, everyone aspires to Super Record and C-Record - consequently reflected in the prices. NOS C-Record in particular has always been stratospheric. Rubber brake hoods in particular are exhorbitant.

Rightly should be as there is obviously demand. All those that couldn't afford them when young are now nearing an empty nest or have emptied the nest and have a little more play money for toys they once couldn't afford.

Those campagnolo clincher rims are particularly popular with people riding fixed gears, especially NOS, as they have no brake wear to affect the aesthetics, so command good prices. What did surprise me was this listing, 48 quid for some Simplex retrofriction shifters!
