I often paint BMX helmets in retro colourschemes (my girlfriend's is red with thick cream stripes to match her bike, mine is pale mint green with red pinstriping to match mine) - they don't look like genuine retro bike helmets but they do match the looks of old bikes much better than modern helmets do. I guess the shape of a BMX helmet is pretty reminiscent of 1950s/60s scooter helmets.
