was thinking more in the lines of a paul mount, like thumpshifters for mtb, but with road bar diameter, and could mount DT shifters

Gut rippers were a nickname for the levers you see on really cheap, seventies road bikes with suicide levers. They mounted on the stem, with the levers facing you.

They are rubbish, you'll get some that someone has ditched if you ask nicely.

Sorry, but why would they be any worse that dt or bar cons?
Most use the same leavers or at least the internals. They were obviously more common on budget bikes but some, like the mid 80-s SunTour had a very nice ratchet mechanism. I you renovate a old 10-14 speed and want a more upright position I think it's hard to beat.
If anyone has a spare set and/or band on downtube cable stop please pm me!
