1938 Fleet (Schwinn) C-model Klunker Project

Today was a good day.

1) Picked up the newly chromed truss rods and hardware. Hats off to Proctors Metal Finishing (link above)

2) Picked up the newly pin-striped frame and fork. Hats off to David at Scott's signs (link above)

3) Cheap headset arrived in the mail off of ebay

So I couldn't wait to build her up! Still need to get a strap for the coaster brake and make a few adjustments, but it's awesome when a good plan finally comes together!

Here are some indoor shots. I'll tidy her up and get some outdoor shots this weekend.

First -- on with the headbadge:

Cranks next (little worried about the arms touching the chain stays under load -- note to self: put some masking tape on the chainstays before you ride):

Chain, rear wheel and seat post:

Fork, truss rods and front wheel:

Almost done!

very smart indeed young man! I love the paintwork and sits nicely with the ano blue wheels.

I am always a bit wary of coaster brakes :?

Its a bit like "marmite" !
if you have not been brought up with it its quite difficult to get accustomed to it ;)

are they really efficient ?

isn't the drum brake much more efficient

Speechless.

Ballet in motion...

I knew this thing would end up immaculate.
future botm winner right here.....
Has my vote.

Take more pictures and then go get it dirty.
You are going so cool chasing your daughters Cannondale down the trail............

Simply stunning bike! I can't believe how clean and light it looks!!!

Congratulations!

Wow, thats been worth the wait. Very pleased for you ;)

Just one thing- tilt the bars back a few degrees. They always look nicer with them raked back a touch.

Make sure you put it up for BOTM next month sir!

Thanks Ductape, Dr S, albash82 & SStumpjump!

Hi praise coming from Ductape & Dr S after being inspired by your fine bikes!

I'm very pleased with how it turned out! Once I found the old Ukais laced to the coaster brake hub, I let them guide the build. I think the fun thing about these clunkers is that they'll naturally evolve as need and part opportunities come along.

I never much thought about it being a BotM contender, but if you don't think I'll be embarrassed, I'll give it a shot.

Ductape - "chasing" is the right word when I ride with my daughter... especially when I'm pulling the soon-to-be 6 year old daughter on the tag-a-long. Hopefully she'll be riding the little pink 20" Schwinn Mini Mesa next year!

Si - I'm looking forward to your next klunker! Keep us posted.
