Bottom bracket spindle length

I'm building a bike from a frameset I bought recently. The frame came without a bottom bracket, but that was ok I thought, because I had one laying around somewhere. When I had installed the bb, cranks and front mech, I noticed the front mech would never be able to reach the large chainring. It just sticks out way too far. I guess I need another spindle then.. How do you detremine what length bb spindle you need?

I assume the same as for MTB's

The crankset make and model will determine it (if running it stock).

EDIT had to look it up but chainline for Road Double is 43.5
(i.e centre of seat tube to middle of both the ring, so probably ~41mm to inner ring)

So with you current bottom bracket, measure the bottom brackets length, fit the chainset and measure to chainline. Find the difference, double it and then take it of your current bottom bracket length.

What kind of cranks, frame and how many speeds? I can look it up in sutherlands too. But it's probably in the link posted above.
