Saab turbo trick

Was talking to a bloke yesterday who tells me there's a simple trick you can do that turns your Saab light-pressure turbo to the full-fat version by swapping two hoses that go into the turbo - he showed me the hoses which were two rubber ones about 7mm diameter near the radiator. You swap one for the other and hey presto an extra 30 or so bhp. He says it makes it prone to being over-blown and the dump valve sounding off, but that's all.

Anybody know if this is true?

Car tuning is a funny game... Saab know far more about turbocharging than I do, so I would be interested to see what the difference beteween the full fat turbo and the LPT are.

The phrase 'overblown' leaves me a little suspicious. LPT cars on the whole have a higher compression ratio than 'Turbo' cars, and you like the head bolts the length they are! ;)

By all means research it but please be careful, I totally buggered the driveability of my BMW 635CSi by putting on a 6 branch manifold, mild (264 degree) cam and a K&N panel filter. It took a lot of rolling road and fuel pressure fiddling to get it right, and if I could do it all again I'd leave it alone!

Good luck with it though if you do go ahead... :D

Now, to look a using a Volvo 740Turbo bottom end with my 16V B234F head and a custom manifold on my 740GLT... ;)

Ta for this. Spoke to the specialists about this and they said yes it can be done and it's does improve the power and won't harm the engine, so who am I to argue! I've bought it anyway - it's getting MOT'd and should have it by Tuesday hopefully!

Nice. Enjoy your new car!

Any such tips for the Audi 1.8T :?:

I could do with 30bhp more.

Go down to your local independent specialists and ask them, I'm sure they'll know if there is! I was surprised at this one and it is so easy to do - literally swap one rubber hose with another top to bottom and hey presto 30bhp more!

Nope, sorry.

There are a lot of things you can do to up power. None of them are free though :(

I have a acquired a seriously boring amount of knowledge about the 1.8T so any specific questions gimme a shout :)

Yeah, thought as much!
I'll be looking at that REVO re-map if I come across a spare £500
Cheers ;)
