If like me you spend a lot of time on the tops and levers, start at the bottom. your hands won 't be pushing on the edges . some modern tapes don't stick under the end plugs well.
What I did at the ends was to cut the tape (white) flush with a razor blade {as I read somewhere) then a few tight turns with some nice white electrical tape then the plugs, they look much neater than just shoving the plugs in.
