What year did STI shifters appear on road bikes?

.

I might be getting my termanology mixed up. By STI I mean dual control.
So the question should be, when did dual control first appear on a production road bike? :D

7-Eleven used them in the 1990 TDF - I don't remember seeing them around before then though presumably prototypes were being tested well before that. On sale to the public the next year I think, so 1991, confirmed by Sheldon here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html

MTB STI was available on 1990 model year bikes in competition with the pretty awful Suntour X-Press. Prior to that thumbshifters were run upsidedown and back to front!

They where certainly a 1991 (Dura-Ace) component, so late 1990 they would be for sale.
Just look in the catalogue, it's been sat at this site since 2006 (though John has labelled it as the 1990 one for some reason even though there is a big '91 printed on the front) ;)
I also remember it as it's pure bike porn and I wasn't even a roadie or had a road bike and still wanted them.

I don't know what was out for 1990 group set though.

Are you sure about that????.....Rapidfire hadn't even hit the MTB market yet.
We were all still sporting top mounts in 1990 weren't we? I think Tomac was running a Dura Ace aero brake lever on his drop bar bike maybe. Seems to me that 1992...Maybe 93 was the start of STI road shifters. GT was new on the scenes with road bikes in 1994 and I though that was the first yr for STI although the pro Peloton may have used it in 1992-3.

This site says DA STI was introduced in 1992....1993 for 600 Ultegra

Err...it lists the Dura Ace Road 7402 groupset ST-7400 brake/gear lever for 1991.

Anyway the question's easy to answer; just look through some old mags.

RapidFire was part of the 1990 MTB groupsets

See my post above
1991 it was certainly out, so would have been available in 1990 to use, before for testing

The cats don't lie ;)

P.S. I think this is a slightly more up to date/correct version of Trautmann's pages
http://www.fa-technik.adfc.de/Herstelle ... en.html#91

According to here it was used all the way up to and including 1996

I have a late '90 'Winning' magazine with pics of Phil Anderson and Sean Yates using early STI's.
