Some Retro things are better off left alone

Speedplay frogs and road shoes in a big city = bad idea.

Almost killed myself 3 times while riding up Market St in Philly. Traffic lights, stop, unclip, light go green, try get pedal clipped in, foot slip, nearly under wheels of bus/taxi/horse drawn buggy (lots of them in Philly)

With out a doubt, the worst pedal i've ever used.

Toeclips really were poo. Even with specialized shoes and wrenching on the Mt Christphes only last a short while.

SPD was a revelation.
Did I fall off when first used? Hell yeah. Many times. First ride was on some tight technical woody trails, with lots of those unplanned stopping/slipping moment. Kind of do or die. I fell lots.

Good plan. Send toeclips to the uncool wall.

Along with brake boosters cos they look so ugly. Rather have brakes not work as well than spoil the looks of a bike. especially on sus forks.. :x

Never used spd's - never want too

flatties & clips are my choice, and they are proper retro too ;)

Maybe so but don't forget SPD's have been with us since 1991, a whole 16 years!

Remember seeing them first at the very first NPS at Blandford Forum in '91, think that was the first time I saw a pair of Rock Shox too.

Other naff retro ideas:

Flex Stems?

Biopace rings?

Cutting down your already narrow flat bars so you couldn't breathe properly!

Bula Hats?

Under chain stay U brakes

Hell! any U Brake

Great, just need a Bula hat now

Toe clips. Hmmm. Spds really were a step forward. Bigger than suspension I'd say, especially for mtbs.

U-brakes were ok.

What was wrong with Bula

tioga clipless pedals & odyssy QRs, both designed NOT to work

I don't think my odyssy pro vapour stem double wind round roller thing worked either to be honest.

but it was about 4 miles long and flat and looked cool.
