i,ve just fitted a 1 1/4" steerer tube too some 35,s do i need a boss or collar to fit the bottom race. the 1 1/8" adapter i removed has a collar which the bottom race press on too

You need a 1 1/4" Crown Race Collar. This sits on the steerer on top of the crown and the crown race of the headset fits on to it.
