1994-5 Shogun Prairie Breaker Pro , 2007 Giant STP0

G'day guys,

Here are my rides.

Retro - my long time faithful Shogun Prairie Breaker, had it over a decade now, in many incarnations, raced XC, DH, slalom, crits, trials :roll:, trail bike, commuter, carport ornament....Always the fallback rig, outlasted all the others.



Frame: 1994 Shogun Prairie Breaker Pro. Rides great, external butted tubes, 4.8lb.
Fork:NOS find Rockshox Q21 / noname rigid
Headset: Token cartridge
Stem: Control Tech 120mm/0 rise
Handlebar: Titec Enduro flat
Brakes: Avid SD5 Levers, shimano vees, or STX-RC cantis with XT brown pads if I feel retro
Shifters: STX-RC 7 speed pods
Derailleurs NOS find LX
Drivetrain:12-32 cassette, HG chain
Crankset:Specialized Strongarm 94bcd
Pedals: Shimano DX MX22 Gold ano
Wheelset: LX/Rhyno Lite. Bontrager Jones AC, Specialized Fastrak 2.10 or Specialized Fatboy 1.25 slick.
Saddle: WTB SST Leather or WTB SST blue kevlar corners
Seatpost: Kalloy black
Weight:12.5kg/bit lighter with the rigid fork. Ooh, Azonic 46gm bottle cage, haha.
Fingers crossed might have a NOS STX-RC/Mavic 238 wheelset for it soon.

I'm about to crack into yet another rebuild on my old Prairie breaker. Been a fair while since the last post, spent some intervening time as a singlespeed, Q21Rs have gone off to another owner as did the Controltech stem.

So specs are a changin'

Fork:? I am thinking Reba or Recon in vintage Rockshox livery.
Headset: Might end up Odyssey toro pro
Stem: Unsure, considering going threaded, have choice of ATAC 120mm or Controltech 120mm nos quill stems.
Handlebar: Purple ano controltech flat bars
Brakes: Unsure. Maybe Maguras, or blackbox Avid vees.
Shifters: STX-RC 7 speed pods
Derailleurs NOS find LX
Drivetrain:12-32 cassette, HG chain
Crankset:Specialized Strongarm S-works, NOS
Pedals: Shimano DX MX22 Gold ano
Wheelset:LX/Rhynolite; may soon get some NOS LX hubs and citron mavic rims. NOS Panaracer Duster VF/Duster VR skinwalls.
Saddle: ? Might find a Flite.
Seatpost: Kalloy black
Weight:we shall see.


Watch this space if you're remotely interested. I'm hoping to go with as much period early-mid 90s stuff as I can, with a few sympathetic modern pieces for functionality as I'd like to actually use it.

Hey nice one for coming back. Shogun looks great, i had a Trail Breaker 2 in 1990, wasn't a bad bike. What happened to Shogun?

As for the STP, (probably wrong category now we have the post 1998 jobbie), very nice build there, I nearly bought one of those last year.

A threaded Reba or Recon? You'd want to be a gun with a headset die!

Go period correct and find a Mag 21. They're a good, functioning fork.

We do have a guy who does occasionally do that type of work for us, on a lathe...But I don't much like the idea, so if I run a modern fork, it will be threadless.

To be a bit clearer, if I go threaded, its much more likely to be something rigid or period style yeah. Mags...yeah probably not. Judy XC/SL maybe.

Its one of those things, I can get chromoly rigid forks no problem, I can get forks threaded if need be, I have access to a selection of nice vintage threaded headsets (ody toro pro, a few shimano ones etc), and a drawer full of vintage quill stems, but I'm having a heck of a time finding a decent threadless vintage stem, or a threadless vintage fork with a usable steerer length...That said I can't find anything useful in a threaded steerer either.
Aaaargh!

I guess I'm 50/50 either way.
