Unidentifiable racer

I just picked up this at a church sale in Barnes for £30.. 'Muddy Fox' branded racer

Hand painted, the MF branded foot straps seem to be colour coded to the frame, and the logos are stuck on.

It has suntour alpha 5000 deralleur and the handlebars are Atax with a peugeot plug in the end of one of them. Maillard front and Pelissier rear hub with a Mavic rim, 6 speed rear 2 front.

Campagnolo front mech and seatpost bolt, Simplex shifters (really nice actually), CLB brake set

I think the person who had it had the muddy fox foot straps and stickers lying round and decided to match his bike to them. People do some funny things.

If anyone has any info, knows what it is or can point me in the right direction, I would very much appreciate it.

A guy in a shop said it was probably late 80s high tensile steel. The welds are done very nicely, they look stuck together and there's virtually no welding marks. I thought it might be a peugeot so I quickly looked at some scans of 70s and 80s catalogues but couldn't find anything.

If the frame has been hand painted and you intend to re-finish it your best bet is probably to carefully apply nitromoors by brush and see if the previous decals were painted over . Even if the frame was rubbed down the residue of the decals may still be there sufficient to determine the make.

To be honest any frame of that era not made with lugs is likely to be made with budget tubing such as cro-mo or Brain etc and mass produced so unlikely to be of any particular interest . You might check the BB and the seat cluster areas for stamped numbers otherwise try posting on some of the classic lightweight forums

Last night I usedsome Nitromors actually to see if there were any markings or logos. I tried the head tube, the side of the down tube, and the seat post tube, nothing at all. It makes me think that maybe it was stolen once and the person disguised what it was. There are serial numbers under the BB though:

on one side, and

8709025

on the other

I'd say that it is very likely to be a Peugeot given the lugless assembly. I think that the seatpost is 25.8mm on those. Probably HLE or carbolite.

People paint bikes for all different reasons, that bike is getting on now it could have just been a bit tatty.

well thats a bit of luck maybe.
Obviously the first number is a former owners post code . It might be worth contacting the residents of the 8 or so houses in that post code range. They might be ablr to tell you something about the history of the frame.

The chances are that the 87 part of the other stamping is the date of the frame which sounds quite feasable actually

Going by the CLB brakes, those forks and the frame style, you have a french fancy.

I'm thinking the forks might be non original. I think most Peugeot's were supplied with painted forks matching the frame .

behave and look at the catalogues! It was pretty much 50/50 depending on the quality of the model.

After a propoer trawl trough the catalogue scans again, with the bike next to me in the living room, I have worked out ( I think) that it's a PH12 from 1983

Either that, or a PH10LS or PH11, but the PH12 seems to have more correct components compared to the others.

Carbolite 103, was quite a good looking bike once, too. Seeing as it's not worth an awful lot I don't think I'll restore it or anything, just have it repsrayed hite and maybe whack a couple of Peugeot stickers on it
