old style hubs/modern kit

take your point about looking funny,i guess you mean the fact that modern hubs have thicker barrels? If i find an old hub can they be adapted from screw on freewheel to cassette somehow?More to it tham i thought!

Cassette and freewheel hubs are really pretty fundamentally different.
To get an old look I would pick a late 80's / early 90's Shimano freehub, as these at least have the "apple core" shape like screw-in freewheel hubs.

On reflection I'm not sure why you want wingnuts anyway...Campagnolo made quick releases from at least the 1950's.

Yup.think you're right hamster-I was trying to get the look of the bike when new, when of course q/r's were available way back, and the bike was really only a sport/tourer anyway, should have thought it through,-so-i guess it isn't really an option to have an old style hub with a cassette. Thanks for all the helpful comments

If you can find wingnuts with a thread suitable for modern axles let me know. I can't but rather fancy them on my flipflop hub

Pretty sure I've seen some metric ones somewhere, but can't find 'em now!
Will let you know if I get lucky
