The original Lx M569 ? chainset is shot and the replacement XT M739 one is now looking tired, so it may be time to fit a new Shimano LX hollow tech 2. At £60 ish it looks my best bet.

So, any advice for fitting one of these. Is it as easy as it looks ?

Or Should I try harder to find a large ring for the XT chainset.

Easy to fit, but you'll need the HT-II spanner, about £10 for one with both parts

the older M580/581 is the one I assume you are talking about as the newer T6xx is a lot more expensive for little reason.

Screws in using this tool as you would expect, remembering to add the spacers needed (instructions tell you which). Then stick crank with bb axle in push on other side and tighten the bolts.
Jobs a good un.

Thanks

Looks easy assuming you have the tools..........

It's just a shame the XT shiny chainset is so shot ( and not so shiny these days). With a M580 LX Hollow tech 2 at £60 looking like good VFM is may be time to retire the XT chainset :(

Then again, I could just save up and get the XT version of Hollow tech :D

You could probably get the whole SLX drive set for the price of the XT chainset ;)

be careful when putting the ht2 bottom bracket in make sure your frames bb shell is faced and that you put the ups in to 34 newton meters, if you swing on the tool the cup will sheer off and the threaded part stays in the frame (i love when customers do this its the i told you so factor) and use this tool and and a tourqe wrench http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=17703

it doesn't mark you BB like the others do and it fits to your tourqe wrench ;) and one of these as well http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=3785 and you can go wrong

Thanks for your help.

The job looked simple enough, but all the supliers keep on about getting it fitted by a bike shop to ensure the BB is faced.

It looks like teh LX M580 is now no longer available, so I have teh choice of basic Deore or SLX, at nearly twice the price !

So now I'll have to buy a whole new set of tools as well :(
