COOLWALL: Sub 20ib mountain bike? Weight saving gone too far

Super lightweight tricked out sub 20 ib bikes? Cool or rubbish?

  • No way - pointless - feel like riding uncooked spagetti. Wouldnt risk my life.

Just for laughs, a set of Shimano 105sc cranks off my DynaTech road bike from when I was at school  No cracks, will find a place on a singlespeed one day I'm sure

Though I think this predates 94 and was a carry over from BMX. Anyone rememeber the rims that were drilled out that were fitted to a top end Burner?

My modern Pace RC200f8 is not far off the 20lb mark, and I haven't gone for really silly light/expensive bits. Okay I did splash out on a Hope Tiglide rear hub, and yes I was a little 'tired and emotional' when I visited the SRP website, maybe visiting the nylon and alloys titanium fixing section was a little too much aswell. It seems fairly bomb proof (probably just given it the kiss of death) and I don't worry about the bills when I chuck it around the Peak District (I do worry about scratching the anodising on the frame though as it looks really good)

I too am a recovering weight weenie, (both financially and physically) managed to get my Hei Hei to a smidge under 18lbs...great fun to ride...deffo cool...but much happier on my Pace now (and it doesn't fly off everything in site! :D)

light

You can't beat a really light mtb. My Klein was 19lb I went up hill like a jet plane as i was only 9.50 stone. So me and the bike weighed nothing. But downhill was wild and  The ti spokes had to be checked after every ride. And the dia-comp bikes took an age to stop me. I do miss that bike so much.

you cant beat sub 20lb for riding off stuff, doesn't matter how small it is, even a dropped digestive biscuit makes an excellent impromptu take off ramp.

I started buying the mags around '92 and everything was about weight, didn't they used to take the bikes apart and list the weights of every bit in the tests?

So, I started buying bits, used to take one thing off, weigh it, weigh the new bit and marvel - and boast to my friends - at the 5 grams I'd saved!

But I think back then it was all about getting up and to the top of that hill before anyone else, it was all about cross country?

Now it all seems to be about going the other way the fastest ... down?

Beautifully put Hermit. I am waiting for the fashion pendulum to swing back!

Love 'em!

Before I got addicted to retro bikes, I was (and still am) a serious weight-weenie. Can't compete with Nino or other ultimate weightweenies in MTBR's 'Save some weight' forums. I don't want to tune the parts that much as they do.

Especially my Haro was neat, it accelerated like a rocketship! But I love to have lightweight parts also in my daily rider. Nothing "stupid light" though - so no drilled parts etc. Just light parts that work.

My previous (now sold) lightweight project:
-1995 Haro Impulse Comp - 19.35 lbs (heavy frame & rear hub)

My regular ride:
-2004 S-Works Enduro - 24.99 lbs

My wife's bike:
-2003 Specialized Epic Marathon - 24.46 lbs (super heavy seat but wife likes it)
http://www.light-bikes.com/bikegallery/BikeListing.asp?id=435

I have not weighed the parts for my retro bikes, so I don't know their weights yet...
