Digital Camera Reccomendations

A second yeah for the Canon Ixus range. Mine's an Ixus 70. Damn good camera with decent optics, seems fairly robust (lives in my camelbak most of the time). The little rechargable bat seems to last for ever and it takes great pics – what more could you ask for.

cheap (have seen it at £120)
does loads more than i know what if does
seems ok to my limited knowledge

I've got a fuji s6500fd which my g/f now uses its a nice halfway between an slr and a compact. its no longer a current model but i paid £144 from tesco a year ago, they seem to still go for similar money on ebay.... nice cos it has manual zoom/focus and is nice to hold, feels similar to my slr but a little lighter.

I've got a Fuji E510[5.2mp]8 different settings each one being very programmable for light /saturation etc,and you can switch between B&W to colour to chrome and back again
It cost about £200 4 yrs ago,its a good all rounder

The more modern ones have image stabilizer which is a must for a digital
Make sure what ever you get has that at least

Got a Canon A720is, 8mp, 6x Zoom, loads of manual settings if you fancy a play, works for ages on two AA'2, cost 130 quid and takes a smashing pic

No complaints from me and image stabilised too for me shaky old hands

at that pricepoint i'd be going for the Lumix TZ5

great camera at a good price which is probably just about to get better with the TZ7 being released next month

Have the TZ5 myself and cannot fault it other than no manual focus.
For a compat(ish) point and shoot with some bells and wistle it's very very good.
The TZ7 with a longer zoom, better HD video recording (in theory) should be better if the increase in pixels and zoom length does not make the picture too noisy.

If you want manual focus/more creative shooting I would go for the compact SLR. Panasonic is of course good but Fuji's have been good (no so much the superzooms, last time I looked), likwise Olympus (pretty much similar to Fuji as they share similar ground).

There is of course too much choice and everything overlaps.

Part of the reason that the TZ5 is so good is that it has a Leica lens.

if you wanted more manual control but wanted to stay with a compact you could try to get a Panasonic Lumix LX3 (demand outstripping supply!)

check first if the spec is what you're after as it only has a relatively short zoom but it goes wider than most & has a very fast lens!
everyones into shooting wide nowadays (seem to be??) & the best zoom you can ever have is your feet
if you want mega zoom you shouldn't really be looking at compacts anyway!
it will also capture raw images which you will have total control over using the supplied software.
had mine about 5 weeks & love it so far
i'm still learning with it & as with everything it will take some experimenting & practice to get the best out of it!
so far so good

also a lot of DSLR guys use this as a carry around everyday camera :!:
