Hi,

I thought this may be of interest.
I am Chief Officer onboard one of the tugs that moves tankers in and out of Coryton refinery in Essex. This pic is of us testing out fire fighting monitors.

FYI the boat is 33m long, 3960KW of power and 2 of them can pull a laden VLCC (supertanker) at about 7mph sideways!

The fire monitors spray 2500m3/min each.

 Nows thats different, How did you end up there just been nosy :D

I joined the Merchant Navy at 18 as a Deck Cadet, working on Container ships out in the far east. 4 months on 1 month off.
Became qualified at 23 and was 3rd Officer 4 months on 2 months off.
Worked on coatal vessels, not tax free anymore but 3 weeks on 3 weeks off as 2nd Officer and Chief Officer.
For the last 3 years I have been on tugs as Chief Officer (dare I say it soon to be Captain) and 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. Bliss!

Money's better than when I was a Cadet too! ;)

Now im being really nosy ( quite intrigued !! )

What does a day consist of?

How long does it take to bring a tanker in?

:D

What does a day consist of?
- Busy days are spent just going up and down the river moving and escorting ships. Quiet days are spent on maintainance and paper work (and ordering more fuel!). Usually we work from 0800-1600 but if there are movements through the night then we adjust the day to suit, 0200-0600 work, then sleep until 1100 then work from 1300-1600 for instance.

How long does it take to bring a tanker in?
-Usuall we meet the tanker off southend, escort her up and make fast to the tanker around Canvey Island, we then swing the ship 180 and push her onto the jetty. Usually 4 hours before she is secure and we let go and go back to our mooring buoy.
Sailins have no escort requirement so only about 1-2 hours.
