Just re-installed XP onto a laptop, cant connect to the internet via Sky broadband router (via ethernet cable).

In internet settings:

It is set to 'never dial a connection'

LAN is set to 'automatically detect settings'

What have I forgotten?

If you have another pc also connected by Ethernet then you could simply compare the settings, it might be worth opening up a command prompt and typing IPCONFIG /ALL on the machine that works properly and ensure that you have DHCP configured and all that sort of stuff!

Cheers,

Roger

Connect the cable

...
Untick the auto detect settings as it's not needed.

Install the drivers for you network card, chances are that is the problem as a fresh install will connect automatically otherwise. (as all it is doing is getting the address from auto DHCP.... unless you have set your router up for static address's, I doubt it).

What laptop make and model ?

Internet options > Connections > Setup > Internet connection wizard

Worth a go

Dell's tend to be pretty easy as they have a very good support site
http://support.dell.com/support/downloa ... l=en&s=dfb and use your product code (or auto find the product code but then you would need a connection ;)).

Broadcom driver
http://support.dell.com/support/downloa ... eid=175637

Install that.

Chances are it is this one, and this is newer than the Dell one. http://www.broadcom.com/support/etherne ... esktop.php

Might not be the probelm though, but worth a try.
Had you connected before via ethernet on this computer or did you use Wi-Fi ?

Seems I'm off to bed though still got a crappy cold and the wife just asked.. ;) ;) :D
