MADCHESTER- 20 years on

again, Im a little too young, but I can fully appreciate what the whole scene did for British music. Some bona fide 'classic' tracks mentioned above, but come on, what about New Order? (one of the greatest bands ever IMO, and still influencing the music scene now)

Not totally off topic but at a bit of a tangent ....
Madchester clearly the centre of everything indie and baggy. Other cities with lots of musical cred, at different times, include Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds. But what about Bristol? Listening to Tricky today and the early 90s came flooding back, post Madchester Bristol was where it was at, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky and the utter class that was Gary Clail's On U Sound System (self proclaimed best white toaster in Bristol). Much of it still sounds fresh today, particularly Massive Attack.

Did my degree in London but was seeing a girl from UMIST so spent most time between 88 and 91 socialising in Manchester or hitching round the UK going to see bands like the Mission, the Stuffies and Jane's Addiction.
Still not grown out of it to be honest - did 8 of the last 9 Mission gigs on the farewell tour last year and travelled over to the UK to see Janes last time round.
Spent the summer of 89 in Manchester and Madchester happened on my year abroad when I was in France, shortly after. So I was "sort of" there in the build-up.
Always thought Madchester was overrated TBH. When it kicked off I was going to see Mudhoney and Soundgarden. And as for Oasis? ....

I was at UMIST 89-92 and spent most of my time afterwards in Manc until 97. Happy days indeed. Although I was more of an Acid Jazzer and played in a few bands at Bells on Oldham Street (where I also worked the door sometimes) and Band On The Wall most Thursdays. My other mates were DJs though, and they had good blags all over town. I also got to know bands playing the town through hanging out at A1 music most Saturday mornings blagging free strings and dicking about on £1000 basses 
I have a few stories about Ryder and Hucknall and the like, mostly more accounts of them being obnoxious to the general public which isn't news. We used to get some bands come to the club after they'd played a gig in town; I remember playing with Aaron from The Spin Doctors one night; he was a very good all-round musician. Harry Dean Stanton was in there one night, his ears are about 8" long, like a Hobbit. I did throw Mark E Smith of The Fall out of the club once. His Mrs had run off with Nigel "Vivaldi" Kennedy and he was in a state.
I never liked Hacienda, I played there 2 or 3 times and my mate had a residency so we could always end up there if nothing else was happening. Found it to be like the emperor's new clothes. Perhaps if I was doing something stronger than beer it would have seemed more grand? Best gig was the night after Massive Attack had played there, they left a load of beer in the dressing room which somehow survived overnight. I think they were big herbivores if you know what I mean. "Home" on Ducie Street was the better club IMHO. Guns and all that shut that scene down.
Still, can't beat a big night out in town and then hitting Rusholme or China Town at 3AM and still being spoiled for choice.

Great thread, agreed with you Jimster on the above " Home at Ducie House", fantastic club, I remember the Salford lads storming it one bonfire night throwing in fire crackers... Bouncers locked us in for our own saftey.
Manc bands - New Order are still my all time faves although I was well into James, obsessively so, saw their gigs all over the country. 808 State need a mention too. Got to admit, copious amounts of soft drugs made this scene so vibrant, breaking into the early 90's that was all that got me through the week
Dr S, spent many a happy Sunday afternoon in the Metropolitan after a big night in the city...
Speaking of Hucknall too, saw him in Central Number One bar recently and found him quite approachable, I was feeling rather "happy" though if you know what I mean so everyone's approachable
