I'm no fan of Marinas but i still take no joy in them being trashed. When they were first launched they were good cars, but as they got long in the tooth they became outdated and aquired their poor reputation.

No, they were shit then and now.

In the same period, for similar money, you could buy an Escort, or a Viva, or a BMW 2002, even a Dolomite if you want to stay BL. They were good cars for their time.

A Maestro is ok with a turbo on, the rest of them were crap too.

Christ yeah... A dolomite sprint or 2002 bathtub Beemer !! Now they were fun cars Very Happy Like you say, even the Maestro Turbo had something going for it !! Retro now anyways!!

As for Mk1 Escorts well !!! Say no more. My first project car and probably my favourites!!

hmmm, you guys don't get it do you. I repeat I am no fan of Marinas and yes there were better cars available at the time. We all like the Escorts or Vivas or whatever else, but why is it our personal mission to destroy other cars that in "our opinion" were "shit". Some people obviously liked them and still do. Why do people blindly follow others opinions? Cars from the 80's and older are becoming rarer all the time, why destroy them needlessly? There are many who would have loved to have those cars.

In short why do we take pleasure from others sorrows?

By that principle we should also preserve bubonic plague, rickets and bigotry. They were also parts of our history.

As a child who grew up in the 1970's, marinas were under-engineered garbage, even when new. They were based on rehashing a Morris Minor (a very good car). As other posters havesaid, there were genuinely good cars of that time. Marina was not one of them. They were badly built and deserve not to be preserved as simply they are a shemeful part of our Motoring history.

If you like them so much I suggest you buy them up. If you are not prepared to spend the £150 or so it takes to buy a pristine one.... ;)

Some Old Brits were genuinely good...MM, Mini, Austin 1100 (pity they never thought about rust), Rover 2000, SD1, Mk1 Escort.

WTF are you on about??!!
Did you read my post before blurting out and insulting me?
Since when have "bubonic plague, rickets and bigotry" brought pleasure to people? And when did I say I liked Marinas? I would not like to own one even if given to me, but I am sympathetic enough to understand others who may like them and wish to own one. I take no pleasure in any car being destroyed for entertainment. By that same principle I didn’t like to see the Jag being trashed either.

don't care if you don't want me here or not but i love top gear and clarkson and co are magic.......well maybe not Hammond but James May is funny as f*ck! I mean come on look at the state of him! If your saying that you respect the opinions of some people that they will like Marinas, Maestros, etc,etc then you have to respect the opinions of the army of fans that do like top gear and not attempt to "trash" them yourself

Top Gear is entertainment.

Period.

 at some of the comments on this thread.

They are all idiots on it but would agree with Picke. It is good entertainment, nothing more nothing less.

Certainly far better than back in the day when it had that bloke with a beard (whos son in the drummer in supergrass iirc) reviewing montego estates.

Marina/ Maestro

One word

Understeer.

That is all.

Maybe so, still good enough to race

Anyway, don't want to get in a slanging match with anyone, but there are plenty of people who don't like TG, just have a look on Piston Heads. For the most part I like TG.

Simple solution to this

If you like it, watch it

If you dont like it, dont watch it

The maestro is the only one with tape on it, just to stop bits falling off at over 33mph.

The rest of the cars are waiting for the stupid maestro to get the f*** out the way as it is still finishing a historic race from the day before.

Its a clever photo shop picture - the 206 looks bigger even though its behind the maestro.

The maestro is just about to be lapped for the 16 time by 42 other cars.

The maestro pace car has broken down again and is waiting to be towed.

They've ALL got stuck behind a Marina 1.8 TC coupe that has broken
down off camera...

The maestro's twin dual-choke carburettors are out of balance again....
