I give up, we have the world kitesurfing champion once again for the 5th time in the row and he never gets a mention.

kitesurfing  there's a sport that makes cycling look properly mainstream

Yeah, I know - but this is just like the guy from our village who was recently World Enduro Champion two years running (2005 & 2006) and has now also won the American GNCC series two years in a row, beating the Americans in their own back yard  . Unfortunately sports like this will never figure in any of these awards, unless it's the Olympics, football or Formula 1 you might as well forget it :( .

A case in point - how many of you have even heard of him ??

What sport is it he does? On the flip if he didn't live in your village would you have heard of him?

Hamilton will get it, I think. He has been in the publics eye all year, as apposed to the cyclists who only really had the Olympics to shine to the masses.

However, I'd love to see Hoy win. He is awesome to watch.

Of course I would - anyone who's into off-road motorcycle sport of any kind knows about him, he's arguably currently the best all-round off-road rider in the world. He is a master of his craft - simple as that. Have a look at the links.....
However - that's just my point. Because these so - called "minority" sports get so little media coverage (mainly because there's much less money tied up in them through advertising, main-stream sponsors etc) sportsmen like this will never make it into any of these "personality of the year" polls.
I'm not sure that it's a bad thing either - just because you excell at your particular sport doesn't mean that you should have to be "media friendly" too.
Surely it's enough to have to turn in the sort of performances that all these guys do, day in, day out ?

Ready to raise some rankles here; probably not so popular amongst all you fit and lithe chaps and chappesses on this forum.

Not world champion this year but why does Phil Taylor never get a mention? 13 times world champion. As far as I'm concerned, darts requires as much skill as some of the other 'sports' about. Stephen Hendry was 'personality' of the year a few years ago. Hand / eye coordination is as good as some other endeavours, i.e shooting etc.

Does that make threading a needle a sport then?

"If Hamilton wins I wonder if his dad have a speach as well!"

if he doesnt , which id doubt he will at the very least hold his hand

but hoy will get it , he comes across as better person . take his apearance on 9out of 10cats for example , he seemed a much nicer chap than hamilton did on topgear where his dad was standing by him like a rich overlord

Yes but it is the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. Not the BBC Game Personality of the year Awards.
