Work bikes

For three moths now, I commute by bike, not bothering with public transportation. No big deal but it adds up to 70km per week...

I use my 1993 GT Ricochet which looks like a rolling pile of trash from afar but it is a sleeper, it actually is a good bike. The first iteration:



With some custom stainless mudguard blades:



Not showing here are the Tubus/Ortlieb combo I use for lugging around lunch, change of clothes, etc. Gone is the octalink crank which kept falling off (!). And yes, it is an old school dynamo on the fork

Very useful, mostly bombproof but goddamn heavy when loaded, the padlock chain does not help one bit. I'm playing with the idea of finding an aluminium GT frame and a more minimalist rack to shed some weight.

Hi bikesandwatches. If you're after a good rack, I really like the Tortec Velocity. Not particularly retro, but very tidy. Had one on my '95 GT Karakoram for commuting for a few years, and looked sur-weeet.

Thanks. I'm always looking out for tidy racks. Occasionally I can get a hot flush looking at the quality of front mounted ones.

I had enough parts to build her up so was up past 3 am getting it all together, then went out and did 80 miles on it. I was surprised with how usable the 44/18 worked out, it’s an easy enough gear to go from plodding along and then to sprinting. Haven’t had to walk it up any hills yet. I plan to get a set of lighter tires, a set of mud guards and use a quill stem adapter so I can run a mordern stem and wider bars

1995 Dawes Genesis road bike when I feel the need to get to work in a hurry via tarmac (1000 odd commute miles since April 2020) and my 1996 Orange C16R drop bar conversion when I'll be hacking the canal route. Only recenly started using the C16R after the rebuild. Last ride on this lovely little bike was 21 years ago, with flat bars ...(400 commute miles since June 2020).

'94 Marin Pine Mountain. Anyone else found the fork trail on these to be too high? I've calculated it at 78mm. I'm sort of used to it now but I used to find it would steer tighter and tighter into corners at lowish speeds.

No reason to rush out and buy some new BS when you can create that perfect functionality with a two decade old steel chassis.
