DBR Axis Team Titanium/ X-Lite tribute...

An odd build for me this, this is the first documented build I've really done (except my '98 Dekerf Team SL) but decided as this could well be the last one for a while (massive collection, don't really know what direction to go in next as I have done an awful lot of builds and starting to get incredibly expensive, I've also started riding my modern ones a fair bit lately :s - wouldnt say falling out of love with Retro, just maybe taking a back seat for a while due to building work on the house etc), I really ought to show the process...

So I've had a stash of a certain flavor of components that I've had for a little while and oddly have then been looking for the right frame to go with them, I think (and hope) that this will work well...

Frame so far, only bought 2 weeks ago from another member on here, believe it's been passed about a few, was Wadsy's former bike of the year but now to give it a slightly different agenda...

1500g on the button, bare frame, re-finished brushed bare Ti with repro decals by Wadsy (thanks mate, you've just saved me a good 2-3 hours just there). Sold to me as a '93 but my money is on it being a '95 **Correction, we believe it's a '94 now due to frame No**

Feedback welcome, I deffo want this to be a rider but my current biggest decision is do I go rigid or do I suspend it?

Fork time...

Current choices as follows...

1. Spare Raleigh/X-Lite colab Trimnell with all the trimmings (very light, adjustable A-C but very low and long reach, not the comfiest of forks for me).

2. Kona Project 2 triple butted steel, 410 A-C, tried & tested fork, one of my all time fav rigid forks for performance.

3. RS Mag 21SL, light, period correct, believe this may have come as option on this bike? 415mm A-C, very plush but also VERY flexy, steering through fast switchbacks and between trees it's like I have to wait for the wheel to catch up lol...

I do have quite a few other spare forks in stock but none that are as ready to bolt on and go like these... welcome peoples feedback and suggestions...

Youve already answered your question over which fork, if you intend to ride it then the P2, if you want it to look right then the Mag21. Having said that, all black components with the P2's would look great

I think you are right, I did really answer my own question... As well as being a good rider I really do want this thing to look the part too... CK headset fitted, along with the P2 forks this afternoon (between showers).. forgot to get the fork weighed but off memory its 900g triple butted steel.

Bit more work today, decided on a rather unexciting but perfectly functioning XT M737 drivetrain for this build... as they say XTR for show, XT for Pro... lol (i'm no pro)... but generally speaking very good kit at very good price, its fairly common but I just love the bang for buck you get with XT M737 and M739 kit...

I've also had these old Campagnolo cantis laying about for a while, I think they are Record OR but i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong (could be icarus) - they have the eyeball style pad holders on them, I've flipped the pad mounts to the rear to give a more low-profile design, ran them like this on a previous bike with no issues but again if anyone can think of any reason it's a bad idea then let me know...

Lastly i'm thinking of tarting the brakes up with some alloy M6 bolts to mount them to the bike, now I know everyone says alloy bolts are not for high stress areas but has anyone ever actually heard of anyone ripping one of these out a canti stud in use before? Rears bolts imo no problem as they aren't really under any load as such, front would be but I generally think there is more of a downward bending force on the canti stud rather than a force trying to rip the bolt head off?

I've used alloy bolts on rear brakes for years with no problems, but would not trust them on the front. Titanium would be fine on the front with the P2 fork.

Beautiful frame, I've always regretted selling my Axis, but I still have the box!
