I've never quite understood the connection myself, except that old bikes are often cheap, and people thinking of trying singlespeed generally want to try it on the cheap first ;-)

I also think its releated to the fact that retro bikes are "generally" seen as simple, From a time before it was necessary to have 6in of travel just to go to the shops. And i think SS ties in with this ethos.
 
If I told you somebody not a million miles away from me was organising it would you be surprized ;)

Time to get those gears taped up :)
