Lotus Sport Campagnolo (finished pg24) & XTR (finished pg29)

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

Ours are both also 1-1/4 heads.

And I made a mistake.... after your comment Ox, I thought I’d better check, the black 16” is K3051447, but the magenta 20” is K3060886
I wonder if these numbers were batched in with the rest of British Eagles numbers?

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

Right, I have pretty much everything now for Jimmy’s dream of a Campagnolo bejewelled Lotus… except for the front mech, it seems the magic three ingredients are a little illusive...

1. 35mm clamp-on
2. Up-pull
3. Triple chain wheel throw

Actually 1 & 3 aren’t that hard to find, it’s the addition of the up-pull that’s proving difficult. Has anyone done a Frankenstein job to resolve this?

Only other thing I can think of is a pulley wheel lower down on the seat tube, but feels a bit Heath Robinson and possible susceptible to clogging up? :?

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

Not that I'm planning on a catalogue correct restoration, but when this popped up on e-bay with this description; “REMOVED FROM LOTUS XT REMOVING & STORAGE MARKS IN 1996” It would be rude not to.... :D

If you were willing to be brave you could always drill the frame and place a rivnut so you didn't need the clamp. I have a spare problem solvers pulley wheel and a decent rivnut set. It is obviously an irreversible step though.

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

Yes, contemplating that idea. It would look a lot tidyer than the clamp. I’ll mock it up to see how/where it works first.

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

Oooooohhhhh! Shiny stuff starting to arrive...a proper NOS (even the tape on the box was unbroken) XTR HP-902 1-1/4” big boy!

If I’m honest this hunter gatherer part of the hobby does give us a buzz! :D

Interestingly it’s stamped ‘PK’ (1991-November) So I’m guessing one of the first produced?
As Mombatbicycles Shimano History page has the XTR range staring in 1992……… ;)

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

Thought I’d get these two frames fully stripped today, bottom brackets didn’t want to play nicely, but after a little mucking about with an old 60’s front axle to help clamp the removal tool in place, both got sorted without too much upset.

Question though, whilst cleaning the worst of the muck off of these frames I noticed that a layer of the finished shiny surface was chipped, I at first thought this was chipped lacquer or clear powder coat. But no, subsequent attempts with thinners made no impact, on closer inspection it looks like a plating layer, to thick and shiny for anodising.... could it be chrome?
